In 12th grade. I
learned to play bridge because we had plumbed the depths of
3-D tic-tac-toe (4x4x4 grid), hearts was boring, & chess
was a foregone conclusion between any 2 opponents in my math
class. (We had college calculus 4 days/week & had the
5th day "free" but had to be in the classroom.) One of my
cherished memories of those days was when my RHO opened 1H
& I bid 2H - I had 6 hearts and figured I had more than
he did. I think it was the 2nd time I ever played.
I played a lot of
bridge in college. It's a wonder I graduated. When I
was asked what my major was, I replied, "Bridge -- oh, and
math & psych!"
Bill and I met in
graduate school (Purdue University) at the bridge table. I
think my partner & I took him for 2 tops, and the rest
is history. Bill & I both took a break from bridge to
raise 6 kids, and then returned after more than a quarter
century's hiatus, joining the ACBL in June, 2001.
I am a Club Director,
but prefer to play. I'm a reasonably good bridge teacher,
but try not to give lessons at the table (unless asked). I
have been involved in the creation & design of Unit 143's
website.
I have accepted
responsibility as Webmaster. I also write the St Louis
Unit news article for the District 8 Advocate, published every
other month.
