I've been playing bridge since I was five years old. In a
family of seven, it was always a competition to see who would
get to play and who would be stuck kibitzing and bringing
the players their pretzels and drinks. After my two older
brothers left for college, this became easier.
My father, Charles Parker, and I took up duplicate together
in November, 1997. The first night we played, at Mark Ehret's
old Monday night game at Temple Israel, a woman with a thick
Brooklyn accent inquired about me: "So," she asked
my father, "is she your wife, your lover, your daughter...or
your granddaughter?" Charlie and I got the biggest
kick out of this and knew we had found a home in the St. Louis
bridge community.
I am a stay-at-home mom with three sons and a husband who
kindly supports my bridge habit. Formerly, I was a teacher,
writer, and editor. I've written one book on teaching. Someday
I would like to return to a career. In the meantime, I volunteer
and tutor my children, who are all learning the game, of course!
I look forward to working for the board because it will be
an opportunity to give back to a community that has offered
a chance to spend time with my father -- and many
others -- doing something we all love.
