QUIZ OF THE DAY:

  1. Do you enjoy playing in Sectionals, Regionals, or Nationals?
  2. Do you enjoy playing in the 199er tournaments held in the Fall and Spring?
  3. Are you glad that those tournaments exist?
  4. Would you feel sad if there were NO local tournaments?
  5. Have you ever played in a tournament and thought that something in the tournament should be different?

If you answered “YES” to any of the above questions, you could be a GREAT member of the Unit 143 Board of Directors. Would you prefer to make sure nothing changes? Or would you like to have the opportunity to MAKE changes? Either way, you can.

You do not have to have a lot of Masterpoints; in fact, all you need is a love for the game and a willingness to give back to the game you love. You do not have to have been playing duplicate a long time; in fact, 6 months is more than enough time to become addicted…. er, hooked… um, committed.

In a nutshell, YOU can become a member of the Unit 143 Board of Directors. You need to be a member (in good standing) of the ACBL and of Unit 143; there are no other legal requirements. The Board of Directors meets once monthly, with the exception of August.

One way to look at it: The Board of Directors of Unit 143 (greater St Louis) consists of a group of bridge players who are willing to do what is necessary to keep tournaments available for the bridge community. Their most important role is to plan and implement an annual regional tournament and six sectionally-rated tournaments --spring, fall, and winter open sectionals, spring and fall 199'er sectionals, and the St. Louis Knockouts. And of course, various Unit events such as "8 Is Enough" and unity games with the ABA.  And whatever else our creativity can make viable.

  • This means being willing to talk about their own ideas – and to listen to others talk about theirs.
  • This means being willing to take responsibility to “pay back” to the bridge community some of what they have received from the efforts of others.

A job can be a joy, but it is still a job that must be done. Your help is needed.

Just collect twenty-five (25) signatures from your ACBL Unit 143 friends and hand the nomination to any Board of Directors member before August 18, 2008. Elections will be held at the October Sectional. Four (4) directorships open in 2008.

Oh, and if you are a Unit 143 member but live outside the metropolitan St Louis area, and wish to be a candidate for the out-of-metro area director, you need only collect TEN (10) non-metro signatures.  Only members living outside the metro St Louis area may vote for non-metro directors.  ONE (1) directorship is open in 2008.
